Frequently Asked Questions...

Where am I most likely to find old "rare" coins?

I tried finding wheat pennies or cents, and war nickels from the bank but I had no luck, I bought 2 dollars worth of pennies and four dollars worth of nickels. I had NO luck... What would be a good place to find silver quarters, dimes, war nickels, buffalo nickels, or wheat pennies? Please help, and no I am not looking to pay for coins for more than face value...

Answer:

You're not trying hard enough. You can find wheat cents, silver nickels and the occasional silver dime by going through rolls from the bank. Probably not any Buffaloes, because there's just too many people aware of them. I've never pulled a silver quarter from a roll, but then, I've probably not tried hard enough. I've went through $100 worth, which was ten rolls. I would probably need to up that a couple thousand dollars worth, over time, to maybe find one silver quarter.

Over the last few years, when I've had the time, I've gone through maybe $500 worth of pennies. That's 1,000 rolls. Fifty thousand pennies. I've gotten a total of maybe 150 or so, an average of one wheat for every three rolls.

That's a lot of work for a few wheats. I do it for a different reason. I take out all of the 95% copper cents made before 1982 (and the 1982s that are copper, because I can tell the difference between those and the zinc cent composition that began mid-year). I've averaged about 25% coppers and have put away about $125 worth of them. The copper alone is worth over $250. I can't trade it yet but the law against melting will be gone in the not-to-distant future.

Back to the silver coins. I've gone through maybe $100 in nickels and found four war nickels - those are even lower odds than wheat pennies. But I've also found a few 1938 and 1939 in nice shape, worth keeping, and a few S mints from the '40s and '50s. Not worth a lot over face value yet, but if you can get them at face value, grab 'em.

I've found four silver dimes, two Roosevelt and two Mercury, out of maybe $100 worth in dimes, that would be 50 rolls.

If I spent more time going to different banks and going through nickels and dimes, I know I would find more. It's a simple numbers game. You are going to have to sort through a LOT more than you have.

Most of the time, the rolls are a bust. But once in a while, you will be lucky to walk into a bank where someone has just turned in rolls from a family estate or many years accumulation, and no one took the time to go through those rolls, or rolled loose coins in a hurry. I ran across a small batch of about five penny rolls that hadn't been touched since 1974. Everything was 1974 or older, so they were all copper, and there were about five wheats per roll out of those. Wheats were out of production for 15 years at that point, and they were already starting to dry up.

Just keep at it if you're serious about it.

Oh, one other thing. You said rare. I've NEVER found a rare coin, out of all of the coins I've handled in my life, and I do look at everything I take in change. I'm talking several hundred thousand coins of all denominations. Finding a rare coin is literally a millions to one chance.
