It wasn't significant enough to have church bells to ring across the city in celebration, but there was reason for the Reds to pause briefly and feel a sense of satisfaction on Sunday. where to buy Cheap MLB Jerseys? maybe ujersy is a good choice.

By hanging on for a 9-7 victory over the Cardinals, the first-place Reds completed a three-game sweep of their heated National League Central rival to move 1 1/2 games up on St. Louis in the standings. The Reds are now a season-high six games over .500 at 23-17.

The sweep was the Reds' first against the Cardinals since Sept. 11-13, 2007, and it was completed by beating Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter, someone they haven't hung with a loss since Aug. 15, 2006.

"Everybody has their day," said second baseman Brandon Phillips, who knocked Carpenter out of the game with a two-run double in the seventh. "Carpenter is one of the best pitchers in this game, and we just hit his mistakes and took advantage of the situations. That's what good teams do. I just love the way we're playing right now. Regardless of who's pitching, I feel like we can go out there and beat everybody."

Carpenter came in 12-3 with a 2.07 ERA in 19 starts lifetime against Cincinnati and was undefeated in his past 11. That included a stretch of 10 consecutive victories until an April 23 no-decision in St. Louis, a game also won by the Reds.

"It's good for our morale and even better to have a win in the win column," center fielder Drew Stubbs said.

The Cardinals staked Carpenter to an early 2-0 lead when Reds starter Travis Wood endured a bumpy second inning as Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina hit back-to-back home runs with one out.

Wood followed by allowing a Tyler Greene double off of the left-field wall and walking Jon Jay, but he got a pair of groundouts to escape.

Over his six innings, Wood allowed two earned runs and seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Leading off for the Reds in the third inning, Ramon Hernandez connected for his third homer in the past two days. Some poor St. Louis defense opened up some more chances.

With Jay Bruce on first base and one out, Scott Rolen lofted a single into center field. Bruce aggressively tried for third base, reaching when Jay's throw missed the target and bounced into the camera well near the visitors' dugout. Bruce was awarded home plate and Rolen went to third. He scored on Fred Lewis' groundout to second base.

In the sixth, Phillips reached on first baseman Albert Pujols' fielding error and scored on Rolen's triple down the right-field line.

After Joey Votto was intentionally walked to load the bases in the seventh, Phillips laced a two-run double over Berkman's head to the right-field warning track to end Carpenter's day.

"I'm just trying to do my job," Phillips said of the Cardinals walking Votto to face him. "My job is to drive people in. I'm doing my job. I'm happy, and the team is happy."  if you want to buy Philadelphia Phillies Roberts Jersey, go to ujersy.

After lefty Trever Miller entered in relief of Carpenter, Bruce pulled the first pitch for a two-run double to right field. Chris Heisey's eighth-inning solo homer made it 9-2 and seemingly put the game on ice.

Logan Ondrusek and Jose Arredondo each provided a perfect inning of relief before the game almost got away in the ninth as Aroldis Chapman was wild again. Chapman walked four of the five batters he faced, including pinch-hitter Allen Craig with the bases loaded, to spark a five-run rally. Nick Masset took over and allowed a Ryan Theriot double to the center-field wall that scored two runs.

"It seemed like we couldn't find that plate for a minute there," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It doesn't take long for a rally. It just shows how important every run is in that situation."

Suddenly, there was a save situation for Francisco Cordero, who surrendered a sliced two-run double to the first batter, Nick Punto.

On a 0-2 pitch, Cordero hit Pujols in the hand with to put the tying run on first base. Matt Holliday almost ended the game with a double play by grounding to the shortstop, but Votto couldn't scoop the relay throw.

Next was the ever-dangerous Berkman, whose 22 homers at Great American Ball Park are the most among visiting active players. However, Berkman also came in 0-for-13 lifetime against Cordero and struck out to end the game.

"I don't put my head down at any point in the game at any time," said Cordero, who has seven saves and is three away from 300 for his career. "You never know what's going on in the game, so I'm always ready for whatever happens."

It was no small feat for the Reds to win the series over the Cardinals. Before Friday, they were 7-14 head to head over the past two seasons. Even though Cincinnati won the division last year, they did it with St. Louis being a thorn in its side.

"I don't want to sound trite, but there's no significance," Berkman said of his team being swept. "We lost three games. We have five and a half months to play. Heck, we may not even be in it in September. They might not, we might not. It's just so early."

Baker saw it a little differently, viewing the win as solid for the collective psyche of his club.

"That was a big sweep right there," Baker said. "They came in 1 1/2 up and left 1 1/2 out. Had it been adverse results, we could have been 4 1/2 out. That was a big, big series for us."  Recommend directory: Philadelphia Phillies Ashburn Jersey.
